Hi all,

Welcome to the list - please step in and say something about yourselves.  Don't be shy.  Why do you love sheep?  I find them very basic, down to earth creatures, and that is relaxing and comforting.  Nothing happier then after feeding and sitting down to watch them  chow down.    Then they relax and zen out and seem to really focus on cud chewing.

Soay any way, I have about 40 head of sheep, which can be seen at http://bluemountainfarm.net       I also have some Fjord horses and a mini donkey and other important farm residents such as cats, dogs, chickens and some geese.  I love waterfowl and wish I had a big pond!     I have some blogging up on farm and various interests at http://bluemountainfarm.net/farm_blog/.

I guess if you all want to know more you can ask me Grin  I've about run out of things to say about myself......

Hi, my name is Carla, I have an addiction.  It is small fuzzy brown sheep, with all different shapes and sizes of horns....
I live in central Alberta, I have 18 or so Soay, and we have about 100 American Black Belly Barbados as well as 25 Katahdins and 15 commercial wool sheep.  My boyfriend and I live on a quarter section of land, and have 9 horses (QH & TB & TWH), breed and train Border Collies (currently have 6), and have 2 guardian dogs, 3 cats and 8 rabbits.  (A fox is dwindling my rabbit numbers).

I am looking for help to get my website posted if you are bored (Jeanine).  It is not co-operating with me!

I manage a forage association for my day job, so am lucky to be able to access lots of sheep info all day long.  Besides, who can get enough information on grazing?  we are suffering a bad drought this year and are having to buy hay for the first time in 5 years-at an exorbitant price (though I think it is still cheaper than anyone is paying in Oregon or Washington).

Looking forward to more information from other breeders as I am relatively new int he sheep industry, though I did have them as a kid, just not as many as now!

Welcome Chickie!  I like the user name, Carla!  Hah!

Wow - didn't realize you had so many Black Bellies!  How do they compare to the Soay?

What kind of help do you need with the website?  I'm not an expert, but happy to help, if I can.

Hi folks,
I'm new here too.  Glad to see a forum is up and going.   Smiley

My name is Shannon Mayfield, and I'm from Pendleton, OR.  I purchased my first Soay sheep this year from Jeanine who lives a short drive away.  My husband and I own a small farm at the base of the blue mountains, where we raise poultry as a small scale hatchery business.  My husband has a steady job in town as the local Harley Davidson shop owner, and I have a painting studio at home that I raise enough money to support the animals with.

I've had cattle ever since I was a kid, and have now dwindled down to only two elderly old cows that were my 4-H projects all throughout school.  They are about 25 years young and are living out their remaining days in "the sunnybrooks retirement pasture" out back.   My husband and I are very active long distance enthusiasts who's passion revolves around endurance riding too.  We have several Akhal Teke sporthorses that I compete on in races across the northwest.  My husband is the crew and support team on our rides when we camp out.  It's challenging and makes my life very worthwhile.

I kind-of got into sheep somewhat due to the fact that my old cows are aging and probably will not be around for much longer.  My parents used to raise Ramboulets, and I had a secret hankering to get back into sheep later on in life when I was grown up and had a place of my own.  I still want a form of meat for the freezer after the cattle are gone - but I don't want to raise any more big animals that will take up a lot of room and require lots of pasture.  So, sheep were my first choice over hogs or goats.  (But alas, we do indeed have a pet goat lurking in the sheep flock around here as well...)  I also like the appeal of a "low maintenance" breed of sheep.  I seem to remember my parents docking tails and shearing a lot....ughhh.

Our sheep flock is very small at the moment, consisting of a Soay ram and two Barbados ewes.  In the future, I do hope to get a registered Soay ewe, (or two or three or four, or...  Smiley) to produce some purebred lambs.  I like Soay's very much because of their smaller size and they are so incredibly cute.  I love the Barbie ewes, but they can't hold a candle to how darned cute that Soay ram is!

Anywho, I don't want to write a mini-novel here.  Just glad to join.   Smiley

Welcome Shannon,

It's awesome that you signed up and posted to the board!   Arnie is looking GREAT!  His little mane is really growing in too.  Love those guy manes on the rams!    Have you been checking http://www.craigslist.com at all? I've seen several small flocks of soay put up for sale recently.  Maybe you can find you some ewes that way too?

I can't believe you have such ancient cows!  Do they have any teeth left at all?  That is really great.  I'd love to hear more about your distance riding someday!

Summer is just going by way to fast!

Hi Jeanine,
That was a great idea!  I hadn't thought of Craigslist.  I surfed around on there for awhile yesterday and found a breeder that was liquidating their flock.  Hopefully things can work out and I might get a few nice ewes for Arne...... Yayyhhh!!!!!

Which brings up a question I have.  I will post it under the appropriate category on here.
